Meditation is a universal spiritual practice.
Through the simple method of silence, stillness and emptying our minds, meditation allows us to be peaceful and to create a space where we can simply rest in the presence of God who gives us life.
Meditation is a method of training our minds to become more peaceful – freeing ourselves from any worries and concerns and enabling us to focus on allowing God’s love to flow through us.
According to John Maine OSB
‘The all important aim of Christian meditation is to allow God’s mysterious and silent presence within us to become more and more not only a reality but THE reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to everything we do and to everything we are.’
There are a number of meditation activities at the Centre each with their own characteristics. For example Monday Meditation at the Centre is a coming together for an hour in a group setting, to let go of all that is going on in our lives and to allow ourselves to be more present to God in ourselves and others.
The following thoughts are from people who meditate with this group on a regular basis:-
‘Life is busy and noisy. Meditation for me, is a quiet space that helps me to let go, even for a short time, the pressures of the day. It enables me to sit in the silence with gratitude for the blessings of the day. By slowing the mind, being calm in the peace and quiet, meditation guides me into a deeper life with God. I feel nourished by what the leader offers and by the meditation session.’
‘In meditation I experience a sense of journeying to the core of my being….to the source of love and all that is life giving, which is God.’
The meditation sessions are led by a member of the group. The leader may offer thoughts, reflections or music as a means of creating the space where we can be calm and still.
It is humbling to share with each other and to appreciate the ideas that people have that may help us to deepen our experience in meditation.
All group members are invited to lead the sessions on a voluntary rota basis.
New meditators are always very welcome to join the group.
