Lectio Divina: 2022-05-22

Today we had Lectio Live as well as Lectio Online.

We reflected on the readings for the Sixth Sunday in Easter Year C.

John 14:23-29 The Holy Spirit will remind you of all I have said to you.

Here are the thoughts from our online members.

One

“The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.”

I love this passage. It is the easiest way of trying to explain the Holy Trinity, the three persons in one God, to anyone who doesn’t understand.

In this passage, I am reminded of the necessity to pray to the Holy Spirit as much as to the Father and to Jesus. God is three persons in one not two and I feel that I don’t pray enough to the Holy Spirit to enable me to understand the Gospels fully.

When we pray Lectio Divina, we always start by asking the Holy Spirit to help us to understand what Jesus is saying to us in the Gospels we read. The Gospels, of course, being the Word, the Truth from God, given to us by His Son Our Lord Jesus Christ. A perfect example of the Holy Trinity at work in us. This is why my prayers must always begin and end with the Sign of the Cross and the words In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God bless you all.

Two

“A peace the world cannot give is my peace to you.”

“Peace”, like “love”, is a word much abused today. Alternative spiritualities/pseudo religions and the secular world use the term and the sign liberally.

Jesus is clear: the peace he brings is not worldly peace.

We can forget that Jesus, The Prince of Peace, told us: “Do not think I have come to bring peace to the world. I have not come to bring peace but the sword” Mathew 10:34. Other translations have “division”, “trouble” or something similar instead of “the sword”. He warns us: “I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law…”

We must not fear when these things happen in families but continue interceding, keeping the true peace, Christ’s own peace, in our own heart. We must not compromise the word and the truth of God for the sake of keeping worldly peace in our families. Our hearts may seem to break but believing in Christ’s victory, in God’s endless mercy, and clinging to him we can know: “All things will be well and all manner of things will be well.”

Continuing to pray that the Holy Spirit fall on us and on our world…

Sad news of further enemy fire as we hear of the young female student in Nigeria burned alive at a demonstration for her faith. (I am not clear on the full story.)
Lesser, but also concerning: two occasions of arson causing very large fires in central Preston (someone very angry: bless them!)

Let’s pray indeed for Christ’s peace to reign in all hearts.

Three

My Father and I will come to them and live with them

Good News Bible – verse 23

Move right into the neighbourhood

Message Bible – verse 23

For many years I felt that God was distant and removed from me. I had no concept of a personal relationship, but over the years that has changed. How comforting I find the words that I read this morning. Not only do I have a relationship with Him but He has moved right in with me. I want to giggle at the thought of it. He doesn’t take up any space in my apartment but I’ll let Him take up as much space as He wants in my heart. He is where He has always been. I have no need to be afraid of anything, He is sustaining me breath.

Four

The Holy Spirit is an amazing helper, he drops thoughts of help into our minds. It sounds funny but I once was looking for my daughter’s bus pass, which she had lost in her bedroom and I had the thought look under the mattress, I immediately thought no why would it be there! But I looked and there it was!

It’s also interesting that Jesus spoke of staying peaceful and receiving His peace in the same passage as He knows that unless we stay peaceful it’s harder to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying. He knew the disciples would feel fear, as do we, but His reassuring words that the Holy Spirit is with us is so comforting – He won’t ever leave us without help.
Part of the Holy Spirit’s work is to strengthen is – helping us not to ‘let’ our hearts be troubled. We can’t do it alone ! And God knows this so He has.

Five

My words today were:

‘…WE, (the Father and Jesus), shall come … and make our home with him’; ‘My peace I give you, a Peace the world can’t give.., my gift to you’; ‘ in My Name’

For me today all was about Love, Peace and Joy:

  • I noticed that everything pointed to the love in between the Holy Trinity; a love that is extended to us, when we follow Jesus. Only when this Triune Love makes a home in us, we can live.
  • Due to this Trinitarian love, Jesus promised that we never be left alone. Therefore, we don’t need to be worried or troubled, for the Holy Spirit will be send to be with us, supporting us in our path.
  • The Peace the Lord is something that nothing and nobody can’t give to us, neither take from us, and that is a perfect gift of love.
  • I felt called to do everything in Jesus Name. The Lord says to me;
    IN MY NAME:
    • do love everybody as I love you
    • do receive my Holy Spirit; which will come to help you, to defend you, to teach you…
    • do pray, do ask everything you need in My Name.

Trust me, I am with you, do not trouble.’

And your words, Lord, feel me with Joy.

And so I prayed for all of you, my brothers and sisters, and for this broken world; for the peace of the Lord reach everyone; for the Almighty and Generous Triune God can do a home in each one; for Joy in all our hearts. In Jesus Name I pray.
