The group met for an hours chat by Zoom on Wednesday to discuss “A time of Gifts” by Patrick Leigh Fermor. A remarkable book of travel-autobiography. At eighteen Paddy Fermor undertook a trip to walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople, subsidised by a pound a week from his mother.
He is a great observer and story teller who easily forms friendships with all types. He picks up languages with ease and writes superb English. A book much enjoyed by all of us; I look forward to reading the other two books about this adventure; “Between the Woods and the Water” and “The Broken Road”
We next meet by Zoom on the 26th May when we discuss the works of DH Lawrence; either a poem or prose extract.
If possible the group would like to return to the Xaverian retreat centre by June, we could have a hybrid meeting where those who wish can attend remotely.
Best wishes to all
